Quotes To Live By

Quote from Mahatma Gandhi. Article Hospitality Quotes To Live By by MY RANGGO Hospitality Magazine

This goes to the core of why we do what we do.

Our industry exists to make life easier and more pleasant for others. The service industry is definitely a calling. If you possess the spirit to serve, you will truly be happy working in this industry.

Quote The customer is never wrong, César Ritz. Article Hospitality Quotes To Live By by MY RANGGO Hospitality Magazine

No business would exist without its customers.

There wouldn’t be any jobs to speak of if there was no one to serve in the first place. Therefore, the customer must always be taken into consideration.

There have been many alternatives to this quote.  Versions which also consider the point of view of the server. These two are my favorites:

“The customer is not always right, but it is not our job to prove them wrong.”

“The customer is not always right, but they must always be treated right.”

Do you agree?

Benjamin Franklin Quote. Article Hospitality Quotes To Live By by MY RANGGO Hospitality Magazine

In our line of work, there are many opportunities to make a positive impact on a guest’s stay, by saying the right things coupled with the right action.

Unfortunately, our hundreds of little interactions everyday, also expose us to the risk of saying the wrong thing.  And possibly ruining the guest’s day, or potentially their entire stay.

A good rule to follow if you’re unsure: “less talk, less mistakes.”

"Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of an intelligent effort." - John Ruskin. Article Hospitality Quotes To Live By by MY RANGGO Hospitality Magazine

The best hoteliers did not get where they are by accident. They got there through experience, learning and training.  As well as a lot of personal effort to improve themselves every single day.

Great hotels also don’t get to number 1 by accident.  They get there by learning from guest complaints, consistently improving standard operating procedures and constantly learning as well as training their people to be the best at their jobs.

"People will forget what you said. They will forget what you did. But they will never forget how you made them feel." - Maya Angelou. Article Hospitality Quotes To Live By by MY RANGGO Hospitality Magazine

The hospitality industry is all about making people feel as if they have a home and a family, even when they are far away from their real homes.

It’s not about the expensive amenities. It’s not about the flowery words. You can make a lasting impression with the simplest gestures, that show that you genuinely care. Asking guests about their day, and truly listening to their answer. Sending them a bowl of congee when they mention they’re feeling a bit under the weather. Remembering their name, their children’s name or their pet’s name and sincerely asking about them.

There are so many genuine things you can do to give them that warm, fuzzy feeling of having a friend and a home away from home.

"Great companies are built by people who never stop thinking about ways to improve the business." Willard “Bill” Marriott. Article Hospitality Quotes To Live By by MY RANGGO Hospitality Magazine

As new hotels pop up everywhere, the competition for guest loyalty becomes fiercer and fiercer.  And people are always on the lookout for the best deals and the best experiences.

Hotels cannot just stick to what they know, or what has worked in the past, anymore . We need to keep innovating, listening to our guests and keeping up with current trends in order to keep improving our service and amenities. Especially now that a lot has changed in hospitality practices, hotels can no longer afford to be complacent. Innovation is the only way to stay relevant.

"Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning." - Bill Gates. Article Hospitality Quotes To Live By by MY RANGGO Hospitality Magazine

Think of your chronic complainers as unpaid auditors or mystery shoppers. They nitpick and find faults where you thought there was none.

Yes, it can get very annoying, but it also forces you to see things with a different set of eyes. And ultimately make improvements in the way you do things in your workplace.

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do." - Steve Jobs. Article Hospitality Quotes To Live By by MY RANGGO Hospitality Magazine

The hospitality industry is a calling and requires a deep passion to serve. If it doesn’t make you happy, or give you some sort of satisfaction, then you better think twice if you are in the right industry.

You know what they say: “love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

We often spend more time at work than we do at home.  So, it’s best to make sure you’re working in a place, and in a job, that makes you happy.

"A vocabulary of truth and simplicity will be of service throughout your life." - Winston Churchill. Article Hospitality Quotes To Live By by MY RANGGO Hospitality Magazine

Strive to be clear and concise.  This is the best way to communicate. Especially if you are dealing with information that can be misinterpreted if you veil it with too many flowery words.

Say it simply to avoid misunderstandings.  And also cut your transaction time by half.

"Take criticism seriously, but not personally." - Hillary Clinton. Article Hospitality Quotes To Live By by MY RANGGO Hospitality Magazine

A very wise quote to remember, especially when you work in the front lines.

You will definitely encounter rude guests who say things that are intended to insult, demean or make you feel bad. Especially if they don’t get their way. Always remember that they are often upset at the situation and not at you.

So take things with a grain of salt and try not to let it affect you personally.

If you know you made a mistake, learn from it and try not to do it again. If you know it’s completely beyond your control, make like Taylor Swift and just shake it off. Don’t let it ruin the rest of your day.
