MKG Consulting’s latest Global Hotel Group Rankings has been released and it shows that the leading Hospitality Brands are focusing on growth, growth, growth – with India, Saudi Arabia, Southeast Asia, and Africa being their key targets for expansion or ‘debuts’, to extend their global footprint.

And it’s not just a focus on new destinations but diversification too –  into the extended stay, the lifestyle and boutique hotel markets.

Marriott Enters the Affordable Accommodation market

The luxury hotel chain Marriott Bonvoy has entered the affordable economy segment, with the launch of City Express by Marriott, after acquiring Hoteles City Express (150 properties).

Other additions to its portfolio include:-

  • The launch of StudioRes, extended-stay accommodations in locations that have high healthcare, university, and industrial demographics.
  • Serviced Apartments, in partnership with Sonder

The City Express business model is aimed at people and businesses wanting to enter the Hospitality Industry or expand their portfolio by providing “… a hotel development opportunity with an efficient operating model, powerful revenue channels and best in class loyalty benefits”, according to their website

Marriott is not the only brand offering these business opportunities.  Anyone in the industry, scrolling through their social media feeds will have been served with at least one Sponsored Ad for brands offering opportunities for hotel ownership, and even hotel room ownership.

Booking.com under more pressure in Europe.

26 hotel associations are on the brink of lodging Damages claims against Booking.com, after a ruling by the European Court of Justice.

The court found that while the Rate Parity clause in Booking.com’s contract isn’t anti-competitive under EU Law, it does restrict hotels from offering lower rates on their own websites or on rival sites, potentially reducing competition.

Currently, 26 Hotel Associations support litigation against the company, and are backed by HOTREC.

HOTREC president Alexandros Vassilikos said “European hoteliers have long endured unfair conditions and inflated costs. Now is the time to stand together and seek redress.”

With a deadline of July 31, there is still time for other Hotel chains or associations to join the litigation.  Read More at Reuters
