10 Hotel Movies Every Hotelier Must Watch

I’m giving you my list of 10 hotel movies every hotelier must watch.  After all, there is nothing like spending your day off kicking back with your favorite food, an ice-cold drink and a good movie.  It’s a bonus if you find a movie you can absolutely relate to! 

There is nothing quite like watching a film about something you know well. Where you can commiserate with the frazzled hotel employee on the screen, or laugh over the familiar problems you see every day at work.

While some of us would rather forget about work when it’s time to relax, sometimes it can also be entertaining to watch other people go through the things we go through at work.  And watch how they handle it. Or don’t handle it!

So, here are ten hotel movies I would recommend  Some have also been recommended to me by my Hugot Hotelier followers. 

 

10 Hotel Movies: For Love or Money (1993)

Doug Ireland is a concierge at the Bradbury, a luxurious hotel in New York City. He has tons of connections and does his job extremely well. 

But Doug’s dream is to open his own hotel someday.

He has been saving money all his life and an opportunity to obtain an option on an old hotel comes to him. However, he only has a few weeks to begin development and needs at least $3 million immediately.  If he doesn’t raise the funds to start the development, the option goes back to the city.

10 Hotel Movies: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011)

A group of British retirees are enticed, by glossy brochures, to live out their retirement at a restored hotel in India.   

The advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel, lead to visions of a life of leisure. But on arrival the group find the palace a shell of its former self and being run by an inexperienced manager. 

Although the Marigold Hotel is far less luxurious than advertised, the group are forever transformed by their shared experiences.  And they discover that life, and love, can begin again when you let go of the past.

10 Hotel Movies: Maid in Manhattan (2002)

Marisa Ventura, a single mother from New York City, works as a housekeeper in a first-class Manhattan hotel.

By a twist of fate Marisa meets a hotel guest, Christopher Marshall, whilst she is wearing a wealthy guests clothes (NEVER try on guests clothes!). Marshall is the heir of a political dynasty.  He assumes that Marisa is a guest at the hotel, because of the expensive clothes she is wearing when they meet. Fate steps in and throws the pair together for a magical night of romance. When Marisa’s true identity is revealed, the two find that they are worlds apart.

10 Hotel Movies: Hotel Mumbai (2018)

Hotel Mumbai is based on a true story of heroism. 

The film recounts the 2008 siege of the famed Taj Hotel, by a group of terrorists in Mumbai, India.  The hotel guests are trapped inside the hotel for days, while four armed terrorists stalk the halls, killing people at random. The hotels renowned chef and a waiter and refuse to leave their guests.

10 Hotel Movies: The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

The Grand Budapest Hotel is based on the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy. 

Gustave prides himself on providing first-class service to the hotel’s guests, including satisfying the sexual needs of the many elderly women who stay there.

10 Hotel Movies: Four Rooms (1995)

This New Years Eve based movie is an anthology; it is made up of four different stories which are tied together by one character.  In this case, Ted, who is a bellhop at Monsignor Hotel in Los Angeles. 

“Strange Brew”, Ted enters the bridal suite with an ice bucket and is involved in a witches meeting.

“Two sides to a Plate”, a jealous husband is going to shoot his wife, accusing her of cheating on him with Ted.

“The Misbehavers”, Ted has to babysit two children who destroy a hotel room.

“The Thrill of the Bet”, Ted has to deliver to a room an ice bucket, a hatchet, a cutting board, twine and three nails due to a strange bet.

10 Hotel Movies: Blame it on the Bellboy (1992)

Blame in on the bellboy is a comedy of errors.

The staff at Hotel Gabrielli in Venice, Italy are eager to please. However, one quirky bellboy, who doesn’t speak English very well, is a little too eager.  He is entrusted with distributing three itinerary envelopes for three guests; a mafia hit man, a real estate agent, and a small-town mayor .  Each of the three guests has a similarly sounding name (Orton, Lawton and Horton) and he accidentally delivers each of the envelopes to the wrong guest.   

The hit man is accidentally given directions to a dating service rendezvous, the amorous mayor is summoned to buy an old estate (instead of a date with a young escort), and the timid property scout picks up an assassination directive.

10 Hotel Movies: Hotel Transylvania (2013)

Hotel Transylvania is Dracula’s lavish five-stake resort. A resort where monsters, and their families, can relax and enjoy themselves.  A resort where no humans are allowed. 

On his daughter’s birthday, Drac invites all his best friends to the resort; Frankenstein and his wife, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Werewolf family, and more.  However, things start to go crazy when a human stumbles into the hotel and changes everything.

10 Hotel Movies: A Five Star Life (2014)

A Five Star Life revolves around Irene, a single career woman in her forties who is a professional Hotel Mystery Guest. 

Irene checks into one luxury suite after another.  She ‘white-gloves’ every surface for traces of dust. She sniffs the bathrobes to make sure they are scented as promised. And she sizes up the staff to make sure they meet the highest mark. 

As a woman with the power to diminish a hotel’s five-star rating, Irene has committed her life to making sure the most minor elements meet the bar of excellence.

10 Hotel Movies Home Alone 2 (1992)

After boarding the wrong plane, Kevin once again finds himself separated from his family.

While the McCallister’s land in Miami, Kevin finds himself lost in New York. Equipped with his dad’s credit card, he checks into the hotel of his dreams. But, of course, the luxury can’t last, and a slapstick running-battle with old foes Harry and Marv (from the original Home Alone) makes sure that this will be a Christmas to remember.
